Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH is honored to have accepted the 2021 American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Surgical Techniques and Technologies Award at the AAHKS Annual Meeting in Dallas this past weekend.

The Program Committee judged Dr. Plancher’s manuscript, Patient Acceptable System State (PASS) in Medial and Lateral Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty: Does the Status of the ACL Impact Outcomes?, based on the evaluation of scientific merit and clinical impact. This acceptance includes the publication of the finalized paper in the Proceedings Volume of the AAHKS Annual Meeting in The Journal of Arthroplasty.

The Proceedings Volume takes great strides to include, “the most current and relevant up-to-date content in the field of hip and knee replacement and alternative procedures, as well as to memorialize and archive one of the largest, if not the largest and best meeting on hip and knee arthroplasty in the world.”

Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine Publishes Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH Article on Bovine Bioinductive Patch Satisfaction

Plancher, MD, MPH is pleased to announce the online availability of Rotator Cuff Repair and the Bovine Bioinductive Patch: Excellent Functional Outcomes and Satisfaction in Patients with Comorbidities in Volume: 9 Issue: 10 of Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, October 29, 2021. Structural failure of rotator cuff repair (RCR) has been reported to occur in 20-94% at one to two-year follow-up with 80% of these failures occurring within three months of surgical intervention. Poor functional outcomes as well as higher rates of retear have been reported in patients with compromised healing potential due to comorbidities such as diabetes, smoking, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia. Augmentation with growth factors and/or biologically augmented patches has been shown to decrease re-tear rates. Biologically-augmented patches provide an environment that is conducive for cell and vessel migration. We investigated patient outcomes following RCR plus bovine bioinductive patch augmentation.

Dr. Plancher and his colleagues studied consecutive series of patients (2015-2018) that underwent RCR plus bovine bioinductive patch by a single surgeon were identified. Patients with diabetes, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and smokers were included. Patients were excluded with revision rotator cuff repairs. Physical exam included shoulder ROM and manual muscle strength. Patients completed DASH, SF-12 physical and mental, VAS pain and patient satisfaction scores to assess postoperative functional outcomes. Paired sample t-tests were used to assess differences before and after surgery (p<0.05). To read the full article, please visit SAGE journals.

Plancher, MD, MPH is pleased to announce the publication of Failure Rates in Contact versus Non-Contact Athletes Following Arthroscopic Inferior Capsular Shift at 10-Year Follow-Up in Volume: 9 Issue: 10 of Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, October 29, 2021. Arthroscopic Bankart repair has become the surgical procedure of choice for many in the United States, over the Latarjet in Europe, for first time anterior shoulder instability with minimal bone loss, less than 20%. However, high recurrence rates in contact athletes have led many to proceed with open type procedures.

Dr. Plancher and his colleagues purpose was to compare failure rates and functional outcomes of the arthroscopic inferior capsular shift in contact and non-contact athletes. They hypothesized that contact and non-contact athletes would exhibit excellent functional outcomes and return to sport with low recurrence rates. Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH is delighted to be included in the ISAKOS publication, The Failed Rotator Cuff, Felix H. Savoie III, Emilio Calvo, and Augustus D. Mazzocca Editors, 2021. The text combines multiple disciplines in assessing and managing failed rotator cuff repair, including diagnostics (lab and imaging), nutrition, soft tissue surgery, arthroplasty surgery and rehabilitation. It also features surgical chapters accompanied by a short, surgical “how to” video, adding value to both print and online versions of this book.

Dr. Plancher and his colleagues contributed the chapter Repair with Biologic Augment, pp. 109-118. This chapter explores the prevalence of rotator cuff retear, the patient that will benefit most from a revision, and the various biological augmentation options that may increase healing in the revision rotator cuff repair.

Plancher, MD, MPH is pleased to announce The Journal of Arthroplasty’s publication of his article Relevance of the Tibial Slope on Functional Outcomes in ACL-Deficient and ACL Intact Fixed-Bearing Medial Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between preoperative posterior tibial slope and postoperative slope of the implant (PSI) on outcomes in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) intact and ACL-deficient knees after fixed-bearing medial UKA.
