As a faculty speaker at the ISAKOS Webinar Series #002 – With APKASS: Knee Replacement in the Aging Athlete on September 11, 2025, Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH, FAOA, FAOS, shared his strategies to optimize outcomes in the recovery of aging athletes. It was an unexpected honor when Oxford University Professor Andrew James Price, referenced the article Return to Sport in Middle-aged and Older Athletes After Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty at a Mean 10-Year Follow-up: Radiographic and Clinical Outcomes published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, June 2023, written by Kevin Plancher.
“Will I be able to participate in my favorite sport again?”, is the number one question from athletes of any age when contemplating surgical
intervention for an injury. Our goal at Plancher Orthopedic & Sports Medicine is to set an individualized treatment plan that has athletes of all ages enjoying their favorite sport again. Our research shows unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) may offer an option to middleaged/older athletes with timely return to the same sport without a lengthy rehabilitation. Dr. Plancher and his research team found that 98% of study participants returned to vigorous or moderate sports a mean 5 months after UKA implantation. UKA is recommended as an alternative procedure in middle-aged and older athletes with single-compartment osteoarthritis who are contemplating a return to vigorous or moderate sport.
