Everyday Arthritis Management

If you suffer from arthritis pain, there are a few things you can do everyday while simultaneously seeking arthritis treatment.

Keep Your Joints Moving: Daily, gentle stretches of your joints that move your joints through their full range of motion can help with pain and alleviate arthritis symptoms.

Good Posture: Ask our arthritis treatment experts about the proper ways to sit, stand, and move with arthritis.

Know Your Limits: Don’t overdo it when it comes to activity. Create a balance of resting and activity that makes sense with your arthritis pain and treatment.

Common Arthritis Symptoms

There are many different types of arthritis that can severely limit activities of daily living, but two of the most common include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Depending on the type of arthritis you have, your signs and symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, and a decreased range of motion.

  • Osteoarthritis – A degenerative bone disease that slowly wears away the cushioning cartilage that allows joints to glide easily when they move. As the cartilage wears away, the smooth surface becomes rougher causing joint movement to become uncomfortable. Without the protective cartilage, joint movement becomes very painful. The increased friction during movement causes inflammation, heat, and swelling which increases joint pain, a common arthritis symptom.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – This is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the joints. Instead of degrading the cartilage, the immune system attacks the lining within the joints. This lining is what promotes a smooth, gliding movement. As the tissue becomes inflamed and swollen, the joint is stretched and displaced. The resulting arthritis symptoms are inflammation and painful joint motion. Rheumatoid arthritis may affect one or several joints and is more commonly seen in the hands.

Arthritis Surgery – An Effective Treatment Option

A variety of treatments are available to treat both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Many patients find relief by using NSAIDs or attending physical therapy. However, since the condition is degenerative, arthritis treatments may become less effective over time. Our mission is to help patients throughout Greenwich, New Canaan, and Westport, CT as well as the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of NYC reduce their arthritis symptoms using any and all tools at our disposal.

Losing the use of a joint, such as a knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, or hand, can seriously affect a person’s lifestyle. When this happens, surgery to replace or stabilize the joint may be suggested. With arthritis surgery, we can repair or replace the affected joint(s) to help relieve pain. There are several different types of surgeries you could have depending on where your arthritis is and how much pain you are experiencing. Some types of surgery options for arthritis treatment include arthroscopy and partial or total joint replacement.  Arthroscopic surgery is an option that allows us to remove damaged cartilage or bone fragments from inside which can help prevent the need for total joint replacement. There are new techniques that can also replace cartilage.

We specialize, as well, in government and private practice clinical trials with new therapy that isn’t available except within special locations. One must qualify for these with an office visit.
