We know from studies published in academia and the commercial industry that diversity will broaden consumer markets and stimulate economic growth especially when females and minorities of all color, race and creed hold positions with greater numbers. Diversity brings to the table individuals that offer a wide range of new skills, different perspectives, and wider backgrounds. Within orthopaedics, physician diversity provides well-documented benefits to patient care. Journal articles have been published that underrepresented minority physicians are more likely to serve uninsured patients and practice in underserved areas, leading to improved patient satisfaction and access to care for these populations. Patients enjoy the ability to communicate with their physician when their physician is from their own culture and they can make a personal connection.
Our fellowship has responded in a positive light that starting August 1, 2020 with the fellowship class of 2020-2021, we were honored to recruit our first female faculty member, Rachel Frank, MD. Dr. Frank is our first female sports medicine highly accomplished board-certified researcher and clinician. On August 1, 2022, with great success of our innovative recruitment program, Lauren Fabian, MD joined as a core faculty, second female sports medicine board certified researcher and acclaimed clinician. We believe along with our additional minority recruitment of core faculty Paul Sethi, MD, another internationally recognized board-certified shoulder and knee surgeon whose family comes from India, we clearly have shown how to advance diversity and inclusion for our faculty. As the Program Director and DIO, Kevin Plancher was previously honored to lead many national cadaveric courses. As a Chair of these courses, he had the opportunity to work with numerous faculty members that has led to a exemplary cadre of core and non core faculty members for our fellowship. We believe our inclusive clinical learning environment will continue to outshine so many other programs for promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
