The Journal of Arthroplasty recently published the article Fixed-Bearing Lateral Unicompartment Knee Arthroplasty in Degenerative ACL-Deficient and ACL-Intact Knees: A Matched Pair Analysis written by the research team at the Orthopaedic Foundation, founded by. Kevin D. Plancher, MD, MPH. FAOA, FAOS. This article is currently available for online.
Utilization of unicompartment knee arthroplasty (UKA) performed between 2012 and 2019 has seen over a 200% increase.[1] While implantation of a UKA does have a major learning curve, several studies have demonstrated excellent long-term (5-to-10- year follow-up) outcomes with high patient satisfaction rates and a return to sport without revision to total knee arthroplasty.
Fixed-bearing lateral UKA in the ACL-deficient knee resulted in lower survival compared to patients who had an intact ACL. Patient-reported outcomes were similar in both groups. The ACL-deficient patient who wishes to undergo lateral UKA should be counseled on the lower survival.
